چکیده

This paper gives a state-of-the-art report on the use of techniques based on personal construct psychology to automate knowledge engineering for expert systems. It presents the concept of knowledge support systems as interactive knowledge engineering tools, states the design criteria for such systems, and outlines the structure and key components of the KITTEN implementation. KITFEN includes tools for interactive repertory grid elicitation and entailment analysis that have been widely used for rapid prototyping of industrial expert systems. It also includes tools for text analysis, behavioral analysis and schema analysis, that offer complementary and alternative approaches to knowledge acquisition. The KIT/'EN implementation integrates these tools around a common database with utilities designed to give multiple perspectives on the knowledge base.

Bothered by abstraction: the effect of expertise on knowledge transfer and subsequent novice performance.

Although experts should be well positioned to convey their superior knowledge and skill to novices, the organization of that knowledge, and particularly its level of abstraction, may make it difficult for them to do so. Using an electronic circuit-wiring task, the authors found that experts as compared with beginners used more abstract and advanced statements and fewer concrete statements when ...

Experts' Explanations Engage Novices in Deep-Processing

Experts and intermediates fundamentally differ in the ways they explain subject matter to novices. Experts provide less details but in a highly coherent format, whereas intermediates provide many additional details but in a format with low coherency. In a recent study, we found that experts’ explanations enabled novices to acquire more transferable and flexible knowledge as opposed to explanati...

The Impact of Expertise on the Capture of Sketched Intentions: Perspectives for Remote Cooperative Design

The paper describes the way expertise and field-knowledge can impact the transfer of graphical intentions during architectural cooperative design. The analysis reveals what matters in transmitting architectural intents and informs how we, as researchers, designers and engineers, should take advantage of both novices’ and experts’ strategies to develop tools, methods or interfaces to support nex...
